The Skilled Regional Visa enables an individual with specific skills and qualifications to remain in Australia on a permanent basis after living and working in a specified regional area for a period of time.
Applicants must have already lived in a specified regional area for at least two years and worked full-time in a specified regional area for at least one year before applying for a permanent visa.
Specified regional areas are all areas other than Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wollongong, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne.
Only certain visa holders (such as the Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subclass 489) are eligible to apply and the applicant must also meet health and character requirements.
A subclass 887 visa entitles the holder to all permanent resident benefits including healthcare, social security benefits and possible eligibility for citizenship.
