The Skilled Independent Visa enables an individual with specific skills and qualifications to migrate to Australia on a permanent basis to fill Australia’s skill shortages.
An applicant must obtain a point score of at least 60 through SkillSelect to be eligible for this visa. No sponsorship or nomination is required for this visa – the applicant will be invited to apply by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
The applicant must be nominated for an occupation from a specified list, the Skilled Occupations List (SOL).
The applicant must also meet other requirements including age (under 50 years), English language skills, qualifications, work experience, health and character.
A subclass 189 visa entitles the holder to all permanent resident benefits including healthcare, social security benefits and possible eligibility for citizenship.
