The Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa is the most common pathway for overseas workers to enter and work in Australia. Your work experience in Australia while holding this visa can entitle you to apply for a permanent employer sponsored visa.
All 457 visa applicants must be sponsored by an eligible business. All business sponsors must meet specific sponsorship requirements to be able to sponsor an overseas worker.
457 visas are valid for up to 4 years and can include your immediate family members. While holding a 457 visa, you can travel in and out of Australia without restriction.
There are 3 stages of a subclass 457 visa application:
1. Sponsorship
The employer must apply for approval as a business sponsor to employ people from overseas when the employer cannot employ someone from within Australia.
2. Nomination
The employer must nominate the overseas worker for the vacant position. The position must be a specified occupation from the Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List (CSOL), with a specified skill level and have a minimum salary payable.
3. Visa Application
The nominated worker must apply for the subclass 457 visa. The applicant must have the necessary skills and experience for the occupation and meet English language, character and health requirements.
